J. J Abrams’ much anticipated Star Wars film has finally been given a name! To the surprise of social media users and cinema lovers the world over, the title of the upcoming sequel was officially confirmed through Twitter.
The full title is tantalisingly mysterious: “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.” Using the official Star Wars Twitter account, the film’s producers also issued a statement that the film has already completed principal photography. Producers and other insiders say the movie is likely to drop in 2016, though speculation is mounting over exactly when the record-breaking franchise-film will be released.
For fans of George Lucas’ sci-fi epic, recent years have been difficult. With the acquisition of the franchise by ubiquitous family entertainment company Disney, fans were left wondering whether the new films would be an exploitative cash-grab or a well-intentioned set of sequels. With the announcement of star director J. J Abrams, the online sphere breathed easy; in his capable hands, the force will no doubt grow stronger. But still, Disney would be keen to recoup their $4 billion dollar splurge.
Reassuringly, the film will feature former stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. The three original cast members will be joined by regulars Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Warwick Davis and Kenny Baker. Despite initial concerns being raised online, Abrams’ film will likely re-boot the franchise in much the same way his Star Trek film did in 2009. An edgy, modern director, Abrams is a devotee of Steven Spielberg and other classic, narrative filmmakers. In short, his sensibilities appear to be well matched to the subject material.
