Robert Allenby then and now…

The strange story of Australian golfer Robert Allenby continues to develop and evolve. The famed sportsman claimed that he was robbed and drugged at a wine bar in Hawaii. But since Mr. Allenby appeared in public, there have been increasing doubts about the veracity of his claims.

In the weeks following the announcement, several bombshells have rocked Mr. Allenby’s reputation. The GolfChannel had reported that the golfer was frequenting a local strip club, where he had notched up a rather sizeable bill. In addition to this revelation, the TV news outlet also reported on news that two homeless men, who saw the incident up-close, reported seeing Mr. Allenby fall and hit his head.

This picture is in stark contrast with that being painted by the pro-golfer, who claimed to have been drugged, robbed and beaten. But today, he addressed the charges head-on. “The number one thing that you should remember is that my story stays exactly the same as the way I told it,” he told reporters in Arizona. “I never lied to anyone, I only told you what I knew and what someone had told me. That is the bottom line.”

In a strangely abrasive style, the Triple Crown winning golfer addressed media reports speculating on the motives behind fabricating such an odd story. “The media have decided that they’re the most amazing experts at investigations and there’s a reason why detectives in Honolulu are some of the best in the world,” he told those journalists in attendance. “I’d really appreciate it if we just let them do their job and maybe we could get to the bottom of it. What has been blown out of proportion is I was a victim, yet all of a sudden you (the media) are putting all the blame on me.”

Despite admonishing the media for their involvement, Mr. Allenby also attempted to allow a bit of ‘wiggle room’ by distancing himself from his increasingly implausible-seeming story. “I take full responsibility if I did do something wrong but as I said from 11:06pm to 1:27am I have no memory in my brain, I have nothing. I have been trying to go backwards and forwards and there is just nothing. I can’t tell you how frustrating that is because we all want to know the truth, we all want to get to the bottom of it.”

Detectives in Hawaii are currently investigating the matter, but are not actively pursuing it as an assault. Visit our site for more as it develops.
